Some background story.
Last december, together with my family, we went to Nepal. With an expectation of just sight-seeing and abit of "adventure" (if you consider riding elephants and chasing after rhinocerous), we went to a few places - Kathmandu, Chitwan, Pokhara and Nargakot.
On the second day of arrival to Nepal, we went to Chitwan. In the evening of the day we arrived in a little village at Chitwan, we were brought around.
We stopped upon a school.
Children were running in the compound. I asked the guide more about the school.
He told us that the building was built from a Taiwanese's donation. But due to the lack of teachers and the proper facilities (e.g. light and books), the school was not actually functioning. So on-off there would be teachers but only for a certain level.
I left the place, with something heavy in my heart.
Recently while chatting with my dad, he also brought up this. Then I realised, the school had actually etched an impression in both of us. There is this haunting feeling from the place. A run-down and mal-functional school. Kids. Kids who wore slippers to school though it's winter. Kids who had to walked miles and miles to get to school. Kids who appreciate the stationary that we brought there. Kids who kept their uniform clean and neat, in comparison to their unkempt casual wear.
The kids kept the dignity of earnest learners.
Eager to learn, appreciative and determined.
Yet, they are deprived. Not that they want to, but the circumstances forced them to. Don't they deserve as much as the Singaporean kids? Or even more?
They don't need PSP, Wii or iPhone. They need books, writing papers, stationary and basic clothing like socks and shoes to go school.
I know i need to do something about this haunting feeling. It has been irking me, in a positive sense. Pushing me to do something.
And i will. And soon.
